The long awaited quarter-litre bike from Yamaha has been finally unveiled. Yamaha launched the YZF R25 in Indonesia at 53 million Indonesian Rupiah, which converts to INR 2.7 Lakhs approximately. The new YZF R25 will boast of a twin-cylinder liquid-cooled four-stroke 250cc engine which produces 36PS@12,000rpm of power and 22.6Nm@10,000rpm. Now that’s a very high revving bike! We are eager to get our hands on this little beast. The YZF R25 weighs a good 166kg and is not as feather-light as the R15.
The YZF R25, if launched in India, will face tough competition from Honda CBR250R, KTM 390 Duke, Suzuki Inazuma, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the DSK Hyosung GT250R. Although the 390 Duke and Ninja 300 have higher capacity engine, due to their pricing we have included them in our comparison list.
Technically the YZF R25 falls in the league of Inazuma, Ninja 300 and GT250R purely because all of them have twin cylinder engines and are priced similar in the range of 2.7 lakhs to 3.5 lakhs (all prices mentioned in this entire article are ex-showroom prices).
Power
The YZF R25 produces 36PS@12,000rpm, although the R25 revs very high at 12,000rpm the power in less compared to rival 390 DUKE which produces 43 bhp and Ninja 300 which produces 39PS. But compared with only 250cc bikes, R25 has the maximum power output way ahead of the others. The CBR250R has the least output at 26 bhp.
Rank | Make & Model | Engine Config | Power |
1 | KTM 390 Duke (ABS) | 373.2cc single-cylinder | 43 bhp @ 9500 rpm |
2 | Kawasaki Ninja 300 | 296cc parallel twin-cylinder | 39 PS @ 11,000 rpm |
3 | Yamaha YZF R25 | 250cc twin-clyinder | 36 PS @ 12,000 rpm |
4 | DSK Hyosung GT250R | 249cc 75◦ V-twin cylinder | 28 bhp @ 10,000rpm |
5 | Suzuki Inazuma | 248cc parallel twin-clyinder | 26 HP @ 8500 RPM |
6 | Honda CBR250R (ABS) | 249cc single-cylinder | 26 bhp @ 8,500 rpm |
Torque
The torque figures are also good for the R25. It loses out obviously to the higher capacity 390 Duke and Ninja 300. The Honda CBR250R slightly edges past the R25 in terms of torque. The Inazuma, R25 and CBR250R have comparable torque.
Rank | Make & Model | Torque |
1 | KTM 390 Duke (ABS) | 35 Nm @ 7500 rpm |
2 | Kawasaki Ninja 300 | 27 Nm @ 10,000 rpm |
3 | Honda CBR250R (ABS) | 22.9 Nm @ 7000 rpm |
4 | Yamaha YZF R25 | 22.6 Nm @ 10,000 rpm |
5 | Suzuki Inazuma | 22 Nm @ 7000 RPM |
6 | DSK Hyosung GT250R | 20.59 Nm @ 8000 rpm |
Weight
No one matches the KTM 390 Duke when it comes to the weight but Yamaha has done a great job to keep the weight down compared to all its other rivals (the Duke being a naked bike has the weight advantage by default). The Hyosung GT250R is the heaviest amongst all at 188 Kgs.
Rank | Make & Model | Weight |
1 | KTM 390 Duke (ABS) | 150 kg |
2 | Yamaha YZF R25 | 166 Kg |
3 | Honda CBR250R (ABS) | 167 Kg |
4 | Kawasaki Ninja 300 | 172 Kg |
5 | Suzuki Inazuma | 183 Kg |
6 | DSK Hyosung GT250R | 188 Kg |
Price
This is the most important factor for any bikes success in the Indian market and Honda CBR250R is the cheapest amongst them. Although not officially launched in India, the R25 would approximately cost INR 2.7 lakhs and that makes it the 2nd costliest 250cc bike in India behind the Suzuki Inazuma.
Rank | Make & Model | Price INR (Ex-Showroom) |
1 | Honda CBR250R (ABS) | 1,90,337 |
2 | KTM 390 Duke (ABS) | 1,92,000 approx |
3 | DSK Hyosung GT250R | 2,75,000 approx |
4 | Yamaha YZF R25 | 2,70,000 approx |
5 | Suzuki Inazuma | 3,15,042 |
6 | Kawasaki Ninja 300 | 3,50,000 approx |
